Fundamentals of Mechanical Properties in Welds: Part 1 CVN Properties

Thus far in this series of articles, we have covered the fundamentals of weld cracks (Summer Edition, 2025), weld metal porosity (Fall Edition 2025), and surface discontinuities (Winter Edition 2025). In this edition we will be discussing the differences in mechanical properties of welds relative to the results published in consumable certifications.

The mechanical properties of weld metal, such as Charpy V-Notch (CVN) properties (e.g., toughness), and tensile and yield strengths, often differ between what is seen on the Certificate of Conformance (CoC) and the production weld itself.

The most common of these discrepancies is the weld metal impact toughness. This article will focus only on this mechanical property.
