Advance your welding career with orbital welding training

Orbital welding is a mechanized welding process in which the welding torch (or electrode) travels around a stationary workpiece, creating a high-quality, repeatable weld. This method reduces variability in manual Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) processes and addresses the challenge of achieving uniform, defect-free welds consistently.  

Because the welding head is precisely controlled by a digital power supply, orbital welding reduces the need for operator intervention, allowing them to oversee the process rather than performing the weld manually.  

Orbital welding ensures superior weld quality, consistent results, and strict adherence to industry standards and acceptance criteria. Because of this, the method is key to many industries including nuclear, shipbuilding, infrastructure, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and aerospace.

3-day hands-on learning

Each cohort includes three days of hands-on training in orbital welding techniques. 

Micro-credential

Prior to the hands-on training, participants complete and earn the ORBI GTAW 302 micro-credential. 

This training opportunity is being delivered by the CWB Group, in partnership with Liburdi Dimetrics Corporation and the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local 128.

Participants in the program must:  

  • be a resident of Ontario
  • be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • NOT be participating in any full-time education or training
  • NOT be participating in any other government-funded training

Prerequisites include:

  • Proven hands-on experience with Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) on both carbon steel and stainless steel and/or all position Certification in SMAW 

  • Ability to read and interpret welding procedure specifications, technical drawings, blueprints and weld symbols 

  • Knowledge of gas and filler variables, shielding gas selection, flow dynamics, and appropriate filler metal applications 

  • Knowledge of heat input management and weld puddle control 

  • Familiarity with weld characteristics and metallurgy  

  • Understanding and adherence to industrial welding safety requirements, PPE usage, and hazard mitigation
