CSA W48: Filler metals and allied materials for metal arc welding

In Canada as mandated by the National and Provincial building codes, Section 4.3.4.1states: "Building and their structural members made of structural steel shall conform to CSA S16 “Design of Steel Structures.”

CSA S16

  • clause 5.18: “Welding electrodes shall meet the requirements of CSA W48, as applicable.”
  • clause 31.4.2: ‘Except as permitted in CSA W47.1, only welding consumables meeting the requirements of CSA W48 and its Annex K shall be used, or in the absence of an applicable CSA W48 requirement, the applicable AWS A5 series of standards shall be used.

CSA S6 Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code

  • clause 10.4.6: “Welding electrodes shall meet the requirements of CSA W48 or the AWS A5 series, as applicable.”
  • Clause 10.23.5.2 “Except as permitted in CSA W47.1, only welding consumables meeting the requirements of CSA W48 and CSA W48, Annex K, shall be used, or, in the absence of an applicable CSA W48 requirement, the applicable AWS A5 series of Standards shall be used.

Only welding consumables that have maintained certification are granted permission to advertise CWB or W48 certification/approved under the manufacturers consumable trade name designation and point of manufacturing.

Mig/Mag Strongweld Wire AWS ER 70S-6 consumable manufactured by Indura has never been certified by CWB and the company has never been granted permission to advertise that their Mig/Mag Strongweld Wire AWS ER 70S-6 consumable is CWB certified to W48.

Purchasers of welding consumables for use on building and bridge component fabrication and erection must reach out to CWB to confirm consumable certification.
