How it Works: Underwater Welding – What is the first thing you need to know?

Underwater Welding – What is the first thing you need to know?

I have been asked from time to time; ‘How can I become an underwater welder?’ And; “What is the first thing I need to know?” The answer is fairly simple - The first thing you need to know is how to stay alive.

Underwater welds are commonly made by especially skilled diver-welders.  These people are divers first and welders second.  One must be the sort of person who is comfortable and cool headed underwater, breathing supplied air from the surface.  Once you have achieved status as a commercial diver, able to work safely under, at times difficult conditions, then you can add the welding skills to your list of abilities.
