CAN/CGSB-48.9712 Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Inspector Certification

CAN/CGSB-48.9712 Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Inspector Certification

The CWB Group certifies non-destructive testing personnel to CAN/CGSB-48.9712-2022 in one or more of the following methods:

  • Magnetic Testing (MT) in Level 2 or 3
  • Penetrant Testing (PT) in Level 2 or 3
  • Ultrasonic Testing (UT) in Level 1, 2 or 3 (Coming Soon)
  • Eddy Current Testing (ET) in Level 1, 2 or 3 (Coming Soon)
  • Radiographic Testing (RT) in Level 1, 2 or 3 (Coming Soon)

Note that, in Canada, individuals are assessed in the “Engineering, Materials and Components (EMC)” sector. Examinations are designed to support inspection activities relevant to this sector.

CAN/CGSB-48.9712-2022 outlines the requirements for eligible welding inspectors to be certified by examination in one of three levels, as well as defining the principles of practice and conduct for maintaining certification. To get certified, all welding inspectors must complete training through a Recognized Training Organization (RTO), meet minimum vision and experience requirements, and successfully pass both written (theoretical) and practical examinations through an Authorized Examination Centre (AEC).

The CWB Group is committed to helping individuals navigate successfully through the certification process and provide examination results in a timely manner. The CWB Group also recommends that candidates take advantage of remote proctoring options, allowing them to complete their written examinations from their preferred location and receive instant results.

Requirements

To achieve and maintain NDT certification under the CAN/CGSB-48.9712-2022 program, individuals must meet several key requirements. These include:

  • Individuals must complete the training program(s) related to the method for which certification is being sought.
  • Individuals must adhere to a strict code of ethics.
  • Individuals must meet minimum vision requirements.
  • Individuals must meet minimum days of experience in the method and level for which certification is being sought that is attested by others.
  • Individuals must demonstrate specified technical knowledge through completion of both written and practical examinations.
  • Individuals must demonstrate ongoing involvement in NDT activities and an understanding of current product standard requirements.

Initial certification is granted for a 5-year period and must be renewed every 5 years. Every 10 years from the date of the initial certification, a recertification process must be completed.

Levels of Certification

CAN/CGSB-48.9712-2022 divides inspectors into three different levels:

  • Level 1 is considered entry level for NDT personnel. These individuals may undertake tasks including the setup of NDT equipment, perform testing, and record, classify, and report results. They are required to work under the supervision of certified Level 2 or 3 personnel.
  • Level 2 inspectors are considered fully competent to inspect without supervision and may undertake additional tasks including the ability to select the NDT technique to be used, interpret results against established standards or procedures, and supervise Level 1 personnel.
  • Level 3 inspectors have demonstrated additional technical knowledge and are deemed capable of additional tasks beyond Level 2, such as the establishment of testing procedures.

Renewal and Recertification

Certification isn't a one-time process.

Every 5 years, certified NDT inspectors must renew their certification by providing proof of continued work experience, proof of continued compliance to visual acuity requirements, and either the successful completion of a practical examination OR meeting the structured credit system.

Every 10 years, certified NDT inspectors must recertify by providing proof of continued work experience, proof of continued compliance to visual acuity requirements, and a practical examination (Level 1 and 2 only). In the case of Level 3 certified personnel, they must also either meet the structured credit requirements or complete a written examination.

NDT Personnel Certification FAQs

CWB Recognized Training Organizations (RTOs) across Canada have training courses specifically designed and approved for NDT personnel certification. See the current list of CWB RTOs.
Certification requires that a candidate has the necessary training and experience, which may take weeks, months or years depending on the method and level of certification desired. The subsequent application process and examinations would require a few weeks to complete. More information is available in our Inspector Guide (Form 500)
Examinations are provided through CWB Authorized Examination Centres (AECs). See the current list of AECs.
The examinations vary by method and level of certification. Typically, a general knowledge exam and a sector specific written examination are required, along with a practical examination.
This varies by method and level but is generally between 2-4 specimens. More information is available in Form 500.
Written exam results are provided immediately at the end of your exam and via email. Practical exam results are shared via email once the exam is graded.
You can renew or recertify up to 12 months prior to your expiration date by completing the renewal application (Form 502) or the recertification application (Form 503). You will have to provide a recently completed Vision form (Form 504) and gather attestations from your referee and employer(s) for your work experience.
