This will include a Q&A period for an industry panel designed to allow students to see a line of sight fur future careers in the welding industry and allow them an opportunity to ask questions to industry representatives. Tour: SAIT Art Smith Aero Centre

The CWB Calgary Chapter has been invited to an exclusive tour of SAIT’s Art Smith Aero Centre. The Art Smith Aero Centre for Training and Technology at SAIT offers four aviation-related training programs: Avionics Technology, Aircraft Structures Technician, Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Technology and Introduction to Aircraft Certification Testing. Occupying 17 acres of land at the Calgary International Airport, the Aero Centre includes custom labs for sheet metal, composite material, gas turbine, avionics, helicopter, reciprocating engine, and aircraft maintenance. The facility is also home to dozens of aircraft, including jets, helicopters, and a vintage fighter. The evening event will begin at 6:00pm and will include a tour of the facility, followed by a catered networking dinner. Space is limited. RSVPs will open for those responding to the e-News invite.

Presentation Abstract:

CSA Standard W47.1 “Certification of Companies for Fusion Welding of Steel” includes new provisions for testing of welding personnel and procedures that will help fabricators welding steel materials less than 3mm thickness, stainless-steel materials of all thicknesses and for robotic welding applications. CSA W47.1 will have its own provisions for testing of welding personnel and procedures specific for Marine industry. Significant changes have been made to Annexes E and G “Requirements for Impact (CVN) and Hardness Testing “ in order to address gaps in the requirements for testing and to ensure an easier adoption and interpretation by industry.

Welding Defects of Category D Joints Found in Compressor Packages

Presentation Abstract:
Rick Marsden will be discussing the results of a study of weld defects found in Category D welds in vessels installed in compressor packages. This study was conducted as part of an accident investigation. The study identified a widespread industry concern relating to Category D welds.

The Welding Rodeo is a premier competition featuring the top Career and Technology Studies (CTS) students in metal fabrication and welding at the high school level. The Welding Rodeo showcases students’ technical, problem-solving and leadership abilities. Students in teams of four participate in various practical challenges designed to test the necessary skills required to be competitive.

CWA CALGARY AND RED FLAME INDUSTRIES - HOT TAP DEMONSTRATION

CWA Calgary is hosting Morgan Dull of Red Flame Industries for a pipeline Hot Tap demonstration. The demonstration will include an example of a coupon drill out, a mock-up of "hot line" welding and a technical presentation. This will be an exciting event with one of our industry's leaders in hot tap welding. Please note that there is limited capacity for this exclusive function and unlike most CWA meetings, dinner will not accompany this presentation.

Speaker Profile– Morgan Dull P.Eng

Morgan Dull graduated from the Welding Engineering Technology program at SAIT in 2005 and worked in Calgary and Ft. McMurray doing mechanical testing, Quality Control, as a Welding Technologist, and Welding Examiner. In 2008 he began a co-op degree program in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Victoria. While at the University of Victoria he was a member of the Formula SAE team which involved TIG welding structural parts and engine components for a race car. In 2013 Morgan graduated UVic and has been with Red Flame Industries since that time.

Dinner Meeting: Pipelines in Alberta – Design, Welding, Commissioning & Monitoring

Dr. Mal Farrokhzad of SAIT will be discussing pipeline in Alberta, including CSA Z662 Code requirements for design of pipeline with respect to general design (section 4 of Z662) and welding (section 7 of CSA Z662), welding (from design, to installation to commissioning), and weld monitoring through integrity tools.

Speaker Profile:

Mal Farrokhzad, PhD, P. Eng. is a principle and consultant engineer and experimental researcher with over 20 years of experience in mechanical and materials engineering related topics. Currently, he is an instructor (materials and welding metallurgy) with Welding Engineering Technology (WET) Program at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Mal holds a Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Calgary. For the last 15 years his career’s main focus has been design, engineering analysis and material testing of pipelines for the energy sector in industry and academia. On mechanical engineering side, he has been involved with stress analysis and finite element analysis of pipelines and piping components as well as hydraulic analysis for transporting gas and liquids through pipelines. On materials side, his main work has focused on material selection, failure analysis, corrosion & erosion analysis, hydrogen measurement on steel, high temperature oxidation and wear of Cer-Met and HVOF coatings. Mal has 15 publications in peer reviewed journals and has taught structural analysis of buried pipeline for Pipeline Engineering Center at the University of Calgary.
