First-come, first-serve - lucky attendees will enjoy a 3-course upscale fine dining experience, a chance to pick Ben Brown, Chief Operating Engineer, and his assistant's brains about their work on the steam engines and anything else at Heritage Park, an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the park - which will include: the snow plow, the Jordan spreader, the passenger cars undergoing window restoration, two steam locomotives, the Car Shop artifacts, and an accessible passenger car build currently happening in their Goat shed, AND networking opportunities with CWBA members.

This is Ben's 4th year as Chief Operating Engineer (3rd Class), Chief Mechanical Officer, and Chief Railway Engineer at Heritage Park. Prior to that, he was the Chief’s assistant for 5 years, after starting at the Park as a Power Engineering student. He earned his burns as Fireman on the Locomotive before learning how to run throttle and brakes. That is a total of 10 years getting to play with some amazing equipment - lucky guy!

This networking event will include a keynote speaker and a Q&A period for an industry panel designed to allow students to see a line of sight into the future of careers in the welding industry and an opportunity to ask questions to industry members.

SAIT Student Paper Competition

OBJECTIVE: The objective is to have at least 2 groups of SAIT students prepare a technical paper and present their findings for a panel of judges. The paper can be on any topic of their choosing related to their field of study: materials, welding, joining, inspection, etc. The paper must be original work completed by the submitting group. This work should include data or information procured by the group themselves and is not intended to come entirely from internet findings. Groups may be comprised of one of two people.
DISCUSSION: The presentations and papers will be judged by a panel of 3 to 5 judges selected from the CWBA organizing committee. The winning group and second and third place groups will be declared at the end of the presentations. The CWB Association Calgary Chapter and CWB Foundation will award $600 to the winner and $400 to the second and third place recipients.

Metallurgical Repairs on Classical Vehicles

Have you ever wondered how they assembled a car back in the sixties? Or how do they repair a frame on a 1932 Duesenberg? Today’s speech presentation is about my involvement how to perform metallurgical repairs on classic vehicles.
Speakers: Terry Mueller P.L. Eng. P. Tech (Eng.) is a welding nut that welds on his cars as part of his vacation. He is a not-so-recent graduate from SAIT. He is also involved in the car hobby since he built his first car a 1966 Mustang. Most importantly is a member of SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) for over 25 years and recently got elected to join the Historical Historic Vehicle Technical Standards Committee! His part of this committee is to develop welding procedures for the repairs and restoration of classic vehicles for the organization.

Pipeline Weld Strength Overmatching in Practice

Material manufacturing techniques have evolved all around the world and the materials often have a wider range of properties and as-welded results. The notion that the weld is always stronger than the parts being joined needs to be evaluated with more scrutiny creating the need for the design, construction, and pipeline maintenance to be adjusted.
Speakers: Nick Khotenko and Kelsey Coulter work for ATCO in the Natural Gas Division and the Weld Quality Assurance team, respectively. Nick is the current Vice-Chair of Construction for Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) - Design, Material and Construction Committee. Kelsey is the Vice-Chair of the CEPA Foundation Welding Best Practices Committee.

About: This presentation will focus on the electrical shock hazards associated with arc welding operations and the available methods that can be used to reduce the risks. These electrical hazards can be generally grouped as either secondary voltage shock or stray welding current faults.
Speaker: Jim Galloway is a professor and the coordinator of welding programs at Conestoga College in Cambridge, Ontario. He holds a B.A.Sc. and is a graduate of the welding technology program at Conestoga.

The winning group and second place group will be declared at the end of the presentations. CWB Association and CWB Foundation will award $1000 to the best and $500 to the second place recipients.
