Welding Inspector Practical Tools

Course Overview

This course is designed to introduce inspectors, engineers, supervisors and other welding personnel to the theory and practical application of welding inspection and the disposition of welded joints. The course begins by identifying and defining common weld discontinuities and joint fit up discrepancies. Participants will be given instruction on the proper use of common weld inspection tools on a variety of actual welded connections. In addition to determining the acceptance of welds to industry standards, participants will review welding procedures, material test reports and code acceptance criteria.

By becoming proficient in the use of basic weld inspection tools like fillet, undercut and reinforcement gages to assess weld discontinuities, learners will be better prepared to work as a welding inspector. The many practical inspection exercises offered will also help in preparing candidates for the practical portions of Level 1 and 2 welding inspector certification examinations. This course presents a great opportunity for welding personnel to experience “hands-on” aspects of weld inspection and the assessment of welded product in accordance with common industry standards.

The course includes:

  • World-class teaching and knowledge from our CWB instructors
  • An opportunity to network with other welding professionals
  • Students will be provided with Practical Welding Inspection Handbook (also part of Inspector Level 1 course, Chapter 9)
  • Inspector Tool kit

The following tools and methods will be used in class on engineered and actual welded connections:

  • Hi/Lo gauge- for examination of joint fit up.
  • Convex Fillet Weld Gauges- for determining size of convex fillet welds.
  • Concave Fillet Weld Gauges- for determining size of concave fillet welds.
  • Undercut gauge (V-WAC)- checking depth of undercut or pitting or height of reinforcement.
  • Bridgecam Gauge- is a unique, versatile tool applied to the inspection of welded surfaces and joints.
  • Extension mirror
  • Flashlight
  • Magnifying glass

When using the above methods to assess quality, participants will be instructed on determining acceptance according to the following common industry standards:

  • CSA Standard W59 Welded Steel Construction
  • AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel
  • ASME B31.1 Power Piping
  • ASME B31.3 Process Piping
