Jim Galloway: When “Good Welds” Go Bad An Introduction to Welding Failure

When: Thursday, October 26th, 9:00 PM - 11:00 PM EDT
Where: Online event

This talk will introduce the most common mechanisms for the failure of welded components, starting with design or misapplication of the material, to faulty workmanship or deterioration in service. We will review some of the fundamental design issues, filler metal selection, welding procedures and processes effects, metallurgical effects of fusion welds and cracking mechanisms, plus service-induced weld failure mechanisms such as fatigue, wear, corrosion, creep, etc.

CSA W47.1 2019 Edition Changes

The new edition of CSA Standard W47.1 has introduced its own new provisions for robotic applications, welding of sheet steel of 3mm and less, welding of stainless steel of all thicknesses and new provisions specific for marine applications. These new provisions will apply to all CSA W47.1 certified welding companies when such applications are required by the Contract, Product Standard or by the National or Provincial Building Codes.

Improving Performance in Aluminum Welding

As the demands for higher productivity and improved quality drive businesses to be more cost effective, advanced techniques offer cost saving measures and competitive edges. This is a look at the effects of wire diameter changes versus travel speeds and distortion as well as other techniques that can increase travel speeds and reduce strength reduction by through optional base alloys. Other challenges to increase performance of aluminum welding using advances in technology will be discussed.

Jeff holds a MASC specialization in welding and is presently a Welding Engineer with BMT Canada Ltd that works with clients in the marine, structural and oil and gas industries. His experience includes research for welding automotive aluminum tailor welded blanks, the development of specialized repair procedures for oil and gas applications, and orbital welding for construction.

The presentation will provide an overview of the welding procedures and practices used to manage the risks associated with maintenance and tie in welding on in-service (live) oil and gas pipelines. Examples of welding procedure qualification tests will be used to demonstrate the importance of welders and engineers working together to develop practical and code compliant welding procedures.

The Bissonnette family owns and operates Wel-Teck Welding Repairs in Cornwall, ON and provide a comprehensive list of services which include factory certified maintenance, calibration and repairs for welding equipment. Justin’s presentation will provide guidance to maintaining your welding equipment in top condition. Troubleshooting tips and suggestions for welders will be provided that can help in avoiding common welding torch, regulator and equipment challenges for GMAW, GTAW, and SMAW processes.
